Your story, your blanks

# Story game maker

Write a story, swap some words for blanks like [noun] or [silly word], and turn it into a game you can play, print or send to a friend.

## How to write a good story game

1. **Write the story first, with real words.** A short story of 100 to 200 words, read aloud in under a minute, works best.
2. **Swap 10 to 15 words for blanks.** Pick the words that matter most: who, what they ate, what they did and how. Too few blanks and the story stays sensible; too many and nobody can follow it.
3. **Mix the prompts.** Nouns and adjectives are the backbone, but a [sound], a [silly word] or an [exclamation] in a quote gets the biggest laughs.
4. **Play it once yourself,** then share it.

The checks panel lists each prompt in the order players will see it and points out stray brackets with their line number. Write “a” before a blank and the game switches it to “an” when the answer needs it.

**Sharing:** Copy share link puts your whole story inside the link, after the # sign. Browsers never send that part to a server, so the game is not stored anywhere online; anyone with the link can play it. Save keeps a copy in this browser only.

Long game links are often shortened before they are shared. If you receive a shortened link and want to know where it leads before you open it, [WebTraceCheck’s redirect checker](https://webtracecheck.com/redirect-chain-check) follows it and shows every stop on the way.

## Questions

**Can I use my own prompts, like [teacher’s name]?**

Yes. Anything in square brackets becomes a prompt. Prompts the site knows, such as [noun] or [verb ending in -ing], show a hint and get random words; your own prompts are shown just as you wrote them.

**Where are my games saved?**

Only in this browser, on this device. Your current draft is kept automatically, and Save adds the game to your list. To move a game to another device, use Download .txt or a share link.

**How long can a story be?**

Up to 8,000 characters and 80 blanks. Most good games are much shorter: about one page and a dozen blanks.
